SINGAPORE : Clients of spas which shut down last year are unhappy over United Overseas Bank's (UOB) decision to continue deducting payments for unused spa services.
While monthly payments are deducted, UOB has arranged for them to continue sessions at an appointed spa.
Other banks said they have waived payments on a case-by-case basis.
Customers had paid for spa packages using credit cards.
Some banks paid the spas in full and deducted monthly instalments from clients.
But following the closure of the spas, some banks continued to deduct payments.
UOB said the amount of unconsumed services could not be readily ascertained, based on spa records provided by its card members.
So it arranged with an appointed spa to provide the remainder of unconsumed services based on a member's declaration.
The Consumers Association of Singapore has urged UOB to review the policy and extend the waiver given by other banks.
"Miss Tan", spa customer and UOB cardholder, said: "I did not like the way the bank handled the matter. I think they were very insincere about helping their cardholders. We understand fully that they are not liable, but if other banks can actually step up and...out of goodwill, absorb the remaining amount for their customers, I do not understand why UOB, such a reputed bank, is unable to do so." - CNA/ms
