SINGAPORE : The Mufti of Singapore, Syed Isa Mohd Semait, has expressed his condolences over the death of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Mohammed Sayed Tantawi.

The Mufti said the grand imam's passing is a great loss to all Muslims, as he lived much of his life in the service of Islam.

He that added for more than 20 years, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar had given fatwa (religious edicts) that are progressive and in line with changing contexts but yet never deviating from the principles of Islam.

Mufti Syed Isa had met Dr Tantawi last month, when Egypt hosted an annual Conference on Islamic Law.

Dr Tantawi died of a heart attack in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

He was 81 years old. - CNA/ms
