SINGAPORE: A former account supervisor with NTUC Club has been sent to 25 months jail for criminal breach of trust.
Over two years, Kwok Hong Leng, would dip her hand into a jackpot sales kitty when she needed money.
Between May 2006 and January 2008, the 37-year-old took between S$1,000 and S$7,000 on each occasion.
As an account supervisor, Kwok counted the daily sales from the jackpot operations at the Chua Chu Kang branch. She would leave an amount aside, count the remaining cash and indicate the amount, excluding the amount she misappropriated.
Kwok would then hand the jackpot collections over, before leaving the outlet with the misappropriated amount and spending the money on her personal and family expenses.
She misappropriated almost S$159,958.40 in all, of which she has paid back S$3,554.68 so far.
Kwok pleaded for leniency as her husband is the family's sole breadwinner and has to shoulder the burden of supporting their three children. She also expressed her remorse at committing the offences and urged the court to impose a short custodial sentence.
But District Judge Toh Yung Cheong noted Kwok had misappropriated "a large amount". Kwok's offences were also premeditated as they were committed over two years, observed Judge Toh.
For each misappropriation offence, Kwok could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined. - CNA/vm
