SINGAPORE: The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority stopped accepting walk-in customers for passport services at 3.40pm on Friday.
ICA said it was experiencing an overcrowding situation at its Passport Section due to overwhelming demand for ICA passport services.
The ICA said it issued more than 3,600 queue tickets for passport services as of 3.30pm. This is 125 per cent more than the usual capacity of 1,600 customers a day.
As the crowd on the passport collection office built up to more than 1,000 in the waiting area, it had to stop accepting walk-in customers.
It added that the move is necessary to prevent overcrowding at the ICA premises for the safety and welfare of its customers.
The ICA said passport collection on Saturday is strictly by appointment only.
Singaporeans are encouraged to make an appointment through the e-Appointment system via the ICA website before coming to collect their passport.
It added that passport application over the counters at ICA Building will be suspended for one week from March 13.
Singaporeans are advised to make use of alternative modes of application for passport such as online via APPLES (Application for Passport On-Line Electronic System); the drop box located outside the ICA Building; or by post. - CNA/vm
