SINGAPORE: Business came to a standstill at Tekka Market in Little India for about half an hour on Saturday morning due to power failure.
A customer called the MediaCorp News Hotline, saying that the power supply was cut at about 10.30am.
This was the second time in a week that Tekka Market was hit by power failure. Last Saturday, stallholders were left without electricity for about three hours.
68-year-old Tay Siam Eng, who sells curry rice at the hawker centre, was relieved that this morning's disruption was shorter.
"Last Saturday, I threw away a lot of food; today no need. The breakdown last Saturday was about three hours during lunchtime. Today, it happened at about 10.30am. Everything was okay after half an hour," she said.
Responding to queries from MediaCorp, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said that it was informed about the power trip at 10.40am. Its consultant rectified the problem within half an hour. It traced the source of the power trip to overloading from a section of the market.
The NEA will monitor the situation and has put its technicians on standby at the market.
Unlike Saturday's incident, the NEA said last week's power trip was caused by a faulty switch-room component, which had overheated.
The device will be replaced on Monday, when the market closes for spring-cleaning.
