SINGAPORE: Two Indonesian men have been arrested for attempting to smuggle 1,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes into Singapore on Thursday night.

The two, aged 29 and 35 years, had allegedly sneaked into Singapore in a sampan. But they were spotted and trailed by three fish farm owners.

The two suspects eventually abandoned the sampan at Pulau Buloh and fled into the forested area.

Police were alerted and a search operation was mounted. They found the suspects hiding in the forest off Lim Chu Kang Lane 9. They also found their sampan, which had 20 bags containing the contraband cigarettes.

Both suspects were charged in court on Saturday with illegal entry, and if found guilty, they face at least six months in prison and caning.
