SINGAPORE: Nanyang Technological University (NTU) students will get a S$5-million boost from a tertiary award that recognises not only top academic achievements, but also empowers junior college and polytechnic teachers to select deserving students for a study grant.
This was announced after DBS Group Holdings chairman Koh Boon Hwee made a S$2.5-million gift to the university, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the government.
The endowment fund will support the University Scholars Award, which honours the top 1 per cent of each cohort. The award will be renamed the Koh Boon Hwee Scholars Award in recognition of the gift.
Award recipients get a gold medal and certificate.
They will also nominate an NTU faculty member and a teacher from their previous educational institute who made an impact in their education journey and who then can award a S$5,000 grant to students aspiring to study in NTU.
Mr Koh, the chairman of NTU's board of trustees, said that this award "passes on the legacy" of good teachers.
