SINGAPORE : It is the first day of the March school holidays, but some primary school students are back in the lab - this time with their parents.

The students and their parents are conducting various experiments at the Science Centre.

They are finding out how everyday objects like plastic cups, straws and balloons can be used for example in an experiment to prove that air has weight.

"My mother and me built a weighing scale to measure the weight," said Darren Seah, a primary three student at North Vista Primary School.

And for many of these young participants, it is the first time they are conducting experiments with their parents.

"It's fun and exciting working with my father," said Grace Pang, a primary four student at North Vista Primary School.

"More often, what we hear is 'I wasn't very good at science, so I don't know if I can do that'. But what (they) realise is that in fact they can do it. And once they discover that, they get over the hurdle and (gain) confidence... And it allows the parent to feel confident helping that child learn science," said David Heil, founder of the Foundation for Family Science (US).

Organised by Abbott, the global health care company hopes to inspire a new generation of scientists by giving youths hands-on opportunities to experience science. - CNA /ls
