SINGAPORE: She would address well-known paraplegic athlete William Tan as "dearest" in emails and wrote about both of them living "in a big bungalow house with grandchildren running around".
And when Dr Tan was not able to use the Internet broadband in his house, Dr Stephanie Chee invited him to use her bedroom to surf the Internet while she moved to her children's room.
In a birthday card to Dr Tan in November 2000, her children addressed him as "Daddy". But the two of them were only in a platonic relationship and were never intimate, insisted Dr Chee on the stand on Monday as her civil suit against Dr Tan opened in the High Court.
She is suing Dr Tan for $259,800 that she said was financial help extended to him between 1999 and 2005.
Dr Chee is also claiming another $149,800 for the losses she suffered from purchasing and selling a unit at One Tree Lodge which she had held on trust and as a nominee for him.
In turn, Dr Tan is claiming that the monies were "love gifts" as the two were in a romantic relationship which soured in 2006. They had met in 1999 when he agreed to help raise funds for the Parkway Healthcare Foundation which Dr Chee was then the general manager of.
Dr Tan is counter-claiming $279,900 which he claims is a loan to Dr Chee to purchase a unit at Maplewoods.
Dr Chee, 51, told the court on Monday that the two had a strong friendship and that Dr Tan would approach her for financial help regarding his daily living expenses, overseas education, flat expenses and car insurance renewals.
She said that Dr Tan, 53, promised to return the money after he finished his medical course at the University of Newcastle in Sydney but kept putting off the repayments. Her emails and calls to ask him to return the money in 2006 were unanswered, she claimed.
When Dr Tan's lawyer Senior Counsel Jimmy Yim said in cross-examination that she had sexual trysts with Dr Tan, Dr Chee denied this. The trial continues. - TODAY
