SINGAPORE : It is World Social Workers' Day on Tuesday, and Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said the role of social workers is evolving into "care coordinators".
Dr Balakrishnan said prospective social workers entering the profession can now expect higher starting salaries of S$2,400 to S2,900, depending on qualifications and work experience.
He said this is to attract and retain social workers.
He also urged them to attend regular training to remain relevant and effective in meeting today's needs.
Dr Balakrishnan said: "There seems to be a further transition in the role of social workers. Increasingly, we are seeing people and families with multi-dimensional dysfunctionality.
"And what we need are people like you who can take a holistic view, not just of the individual, but of the family and of the social environment in which these families or individuals are functioning, or not functioning.
"And coordination then means you need to be able to communicate with all the other stakeholders in our society." - CNA/ms
