SINGAPORE: A cleaner escaped the gallows after a murder charge, for causing his daughter's death, was reduced to that of culpable homicide.
The 28-year-old man, who cannot be named so as to protect the identity of his other children, had been charged with slapping and punching his 23-month old daughter on January 6 last year, thereby causing her death.
The Court was told he was enraged when he found her playing with his cigarettes.
Justice Lee Seiu Kin ruled that while the injuries did result in the girl's death, there was no evidence that the accused intended to kill her.
The girl died because one of her major veins, the inferior vena cava, ruptured. This caused blood to collect inside her heart, preventing it from pumping.
Justice Lee acquitted the man of murder but found him guilty of culpable homicide. His sentence will be meted out at a later date.
