SINGAPORE : The "B" syllabus for Chinese Language or CL "B" is similar to those offered for other subjects - and is tailored for students who are exceptionally weak in the language.

Senior Minister of State for Education and National Development Grace Fu said the "B" syllabus is one way of helping students with bigger learning needs.

She was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event organised by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority.

There had been concerns that the scope of CL "B" may not be enough to enable students to retain the language after they leave school.

Ms Fu said: "We're talking about probably five to 10 per cent of the student population. We've done that for other subjects as well, whether it's in English, Maths or Science.

"We recognise that some students may need more help than the rest and they may achieve a standard that's probably a more basic level. So what we're doing with CL "B" is no different from what we're doing for other subjects."
