SINGAPORE : Singapore and Chinese officials are studying the details of a Light Rail Transit (LRT) project that will enable residents to shuttle between the Tianjin Eco-city and Beijing within a shorter time.

Tianjin Eco-city is a joint-government project between Singapore and China.

The LRT will be an integral feature of the city, which promotes a green lifestyle.

But building work has been delayed following a new proposal by the Chinese government to link the rail to Beijing.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said: "There is some slight realignment and modification of a plan, which will, I'm told, likely to better serve the Eco-city.

"And it will also help better connectivity between the Eco-city and Tianjin and beyond Tianjin to Beijing and other parts of the Tianjin area. I'm told that this new alignment has now been endorsed and will be up for public consultation, getting feedback and so on.

"So between the two sides, Singapore and Tianjin, the officials will sit down and look at the details of this change."

Mr Wong was speaking to reporters after a site visit of the eco-city on Friday. He said he is impressed by the "remarkable" progress made by the development since his last visit in September 2008.

Both governments have targeted to complete the first phase of development in three to five years. The initial phase will cover 4 square kilometres, out of a total of 30 square kilometres.
