SINGAPORE : Singapore's young business leaders are spearheading a new move to support the country as host of global events.
The initiative - Singapore Welcomes the World 2010 - aims to get Singaporeans to be gracious in welcoming international guests.
Kenny Eng, director of Gardenasia said: "As young business leaders, I think there's a lot of initiative that we want to see. As I always believe, our business is people's business. People make us successful. If we can influence, we influence.
"At the end of the day, if this works to be a catalyst effect, it'll be perfect for the market, and it's good for us as individuals and as a company as well."
This is good news indeed - especially when the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) and F1 Night Race will attract visitors from 200 countries.
And the entrepreneurs from the various industries want their feet in the door - even though they are not sponsors.
Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth & Sports said: "Sponsorship has its own rights, so the sponsors get the right to use the logos and all. But what about the others? What about individuals and companies?
"And many companies are saying they want to support the YOG. But I believe that there are ways to do it. And that's why we feel messages like welcoming the world or even, let's make history together, without using the YOG logo, is possible."
The Young Business Leaders initiative was set up in 2007. Membership is by invitation and includes directors from the food and beverage, IT, events management, and the construction sector. - CNA /ls
