SINGAPORE: National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said Singapore's progress and transformation as an independent nation-state has been vivid and impressive.
But he said Singapore can never remain static.
He was speaking at his ministry's joint scholarship presentation ceremony on Tuesday morning.
Mr Mah said in a changing global environment, Singapore is required to expand its horizons to move beyond what it has been doing traditionally.
He said "success yesterday does not guarantee success tomorrow".
He said his ministry needs to take into account emerging concerns and trends.
The effects of climate change and the need to put in place more sustainable and eco-friendly practices is just one example.
Mr Mah also said all these efforts won't be possible without a team of people who are passionate.
He said: "It is the ideas and ingenuity, the enthusiasm and energy and even the toil and tears of the many dedicated and passionate officers working in the ministry, building not some artificial physical edifice, but a best home for all our people, a home for you and I."
Mr Mah presented scholarships to 39 undergraduates and 12 post-graduate students.
The scholarship recipients comprise individuals from a wide spectrum of specialisations, including Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Biology.
Some of them will also be exploring new fields of study, such as Aquaculture, Agricultural Economics and Food Technology. - CNA/vm
