BUCHAREST, Romania : Former Romanian Charge d 'Affaires Silviu Ionescu has suffered a setback in his bid to be released from jail as he stands trial for manslaughter.
The presiding judge has rejected his request to be released on judicial supervision.
The ruling was read out in court on Wednesday, in a public session, but not in the presence of either Ionescu or his attorney.
According to Romanian law, their presence was not mandatory.
Ionescu's lawyer, Nelu Tasca, has already appealed against the ruling. According to him, the request for release met all the conditions needed.
The appeal will be referred to a higher court on Thursday and a decision will need to be made no later than Monday. This means that Ionescu may have another day in court on Friday or Monday.
On July 27, the first day of the trial, Ionescu requested that the court releases him under judicial supervision due to the fact that he is the sole provider for his family.
If the court granted his request, he would be out of prison, but not able to leave the country without permission.
The former diplomat stated in court that his wife has been committed to a mental institution and cannot provide for their two sons.
Ionescu is wanted in Singapore for his involvement in two hit-and-run accidents along Bukit Panjang on December 15 last year in which one person was killed and two others injured.
