SINGAPORE : Singapore has won its first-ever world sailing title in the 420 class.

On Saturday, national sailors Justin Liu and Sherman Cheng took the men's 420 crown at the International 420 World Sailing Championship in Haifa, Israel.

Liu, 19, and Cheng, 18, topped the 42-strong fleet with 36 points after two discards from 11 races. Although they finished their final two races on Saturday in 12th and third positions respectively, it was enough to give them the title - which is also the 17th world sailing title won by Singapore.

Italy's Francesco Falcetelli and Gabriele Franciolini finished second on 57 points, with another Italian duo in Edoardo Mancinelli and Leonardo Cucchiara third with 70 points.

Serena Wong, the Team Manager in Israel said: "Everyone in the team is very happy for their result because they are the first Asians to win this world championship, so it's kind of a historic win for Asia as well as Singapore, and we're all very proud of them.

"We have the Asian Games at the end of the year, in November, so that would be the next focus for us. We're going to train towards that. "

The team will arrive in Singapore on Tuesday at 7.40am.
