SINGAPORE: Singapore now has 749 optometrists and 1,544 opticians registered under the Optometrists and Opticians Board.

All those who want to practise must be registered.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said this in a written reply to a question from Sembawang MP Lim Wee Kiak.

Dr Lim had asked what measures are implemented to improve professional standards of primary eye care in Singapore.

Mr Khaw said the Optometrists and Opticians Board had introduced several measures to do so.

One is to encourage all registered optometrists and opticians to participate in continuing professional education, which will be made compulsory next year.

And the other is that all fresh optometry and opticianry graduates must work under the supervision of an experienced practitioner for a period of between one and two years.

Mr Khaw said the board has so far received two complaints from the public. One was dismissed, while the other is under investigation.
