PM Lee sends condolences to HK, Philippine leaders on deadly hostage ordeal

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has sent his condolences to the leaders of Hong Kong and the Philippines on the hostage incident in Manila that resulted in the deaths of eight tourists from Hong Kong on Monday.

In his letter to Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Mr Lee said he was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the bus hijack incident.

Mr Lee said: "On behalf of the people and government of Singapore, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to you and the families of the victims and their loved ones. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them during this difficult time."

Writing to Philippine President Benigno Aquino, Mr Lee said he was saddened to learn of the unfortunate hostage situation, and extended his "deepest sympathies on the tragic loss of lives in the rescue operation."
