SINGAPORE : There has been another surge in cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD).
Last week, 1,261 cases were reported - up from 982 the previous week.
This brings the total number for this year so far to about 20,200.
That is almost double the number of about 11,000 cases during the same period last year.
As the outbreak worsens, three more pre-school centres have closed for 10 days.
They are Star Learners@Sembawang, PCF Kampong Chai Chee and Glory Kindergarten in Bukit Batok.
Each centre has had more than 16 HFMD cases for over 24 days.
The temporary closure is to help break the chain of transmission.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) is also monitoring four other centres which have "active clusters with prolonged transmission" of more than 10 cases over 16 days.
Star Learners@Sembawang and Glory Kindergarten in Pei Wah Avenue are set to reopen after August 27, while PCF Kampong Chai Chee is set to do so after August 29.
The MOH has urged parents to ensure that their children adopt good hygiene practices to minimise the risk of HFMD. - CNA /ls
