SINGAPORE : Singapore faces constant challenges on how to improve its living environment to meet the needs of an increasingly affluent population.
And the population is used to the dynamism and comforts of an international city, said Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Lui Tuck Yew, on Thursday.
Mr Lui was speaking at the official opening of the Singapore Pavilion at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in Italy.
He said that the thoughtful application of design is essential to balance the infrastructural needs of a global city and the social needs of the population.
Design also helps to lay a strong foundation for growth while carefully protecting the environment.
Mr Lui said many developments in Singapore are helmed by local designers and architects. But Singapore is also an open society that welcomes both proven and promising talent.
He said top architectural firms from around the world have found the openness in Singapore a welcoming delight.
Singapore has unveiled a 35-metre long model called "1000 Singapores" that represents the various cross-sections of the country. This is Singapore's fourth presentation at the Biennale.
