SINGAPORE : The National University Hospital (NUH) celebrates its 25th anniversary next week, and needs to expand for the future.
In recent years, its next stage of development has been constrained by the shortage of facilities including car parks, operating theatres and beds.
Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan noted this in his blog on Thursday after touring the new S$180-million National University Health System tower block.
As part of the new Master Plan, the tower block is one of four new buildings to be added to the NUHS Campus - the Faculty of Dentistry was completed in last December, the Centre for Translational Medicine will be completed in 2012, and the NUH Medical Centre, in 2013.
The development blueprint takes into account the MRT station opening next door, the need to intensify land use, and the development of NUH as an academic medical centre with heart and cancer specialty centres.
Mr Khaw said the tower block has boosted staff morale.
Housing 376 carpark lots and new offices for its doctors, it frees up space in NUH's main building for more operating theatres and clinical facilities.
