SINGAPORE: It was his nervousness that him away.
A man, when was asked to open the car boot for a routine inspection at the Tuas Checkpoint on Wednesday, started sweating profusely despite the air-conditioned car.
The driver of a Malaysian car also said the boot could not be opened as the mechanism is faulty.
When Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers checked the boot through the rear passenger seats, they found two Indian illegal immigrants hiding.
When questioned, the 21-year-old driver said he was offered RM800 to help transport the illegal immigrants out of Singapore.
He was handed the car in Johor Bahru and told to pick up the two Indians near an MRT station in the western part of Singapore.
ICA said the Indian nationals had paid between S$1,000 and S$1,200 to unknown agents to make the arrangements.
The trio is currently under investigations.
The car has also been detained by the authority.
Those caught overstaying or found guilty of illegal entry can be jailed for up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
The penalties for illegal departure are a fine of up to S$2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.
