SINGAPORE: The National Day Rally speech of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday will have four main themes - the Singapore economy, education system, immigration policy and the Singapore spirit.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said Mr Lee will discuss Singapore's approaches to these issues.

He will also discuss how the policies can be improved and refined in order to secure the country's future.

Mr Lee will start off his speeches in Malay and Mandarin at 6.45pm, followed by his English speech at 8pm.

Several Members of Parliament Channel NewsAsia spoke to say this year's rally is being held during a time of hope and optimism, after Singapore emerged with flying colours from the global economic downturn of the last two years.

But MPs also caution against the danger of complacency and believe Mr Lee will chart the economic scenario for the country and the region, and some of the risks which the nation must keep a lookout for.

Ms Jessica Tan, GPC Chairperson for Trade and Industry and Finance, said: "Certainly from last year, it is more upbeat with the strong growth we have had in the last few quarters. We do, however, need to stay prepared to respond to changes while we continue to leverage from the current positive trend."

Dr Lam Pin Min, GPC Chair for Health, said: "Singapore has recovered from the recession with record growth forecasted this year. Singaporeans have shown resilience and responded positively to the government's measures during the downturn. As such, Singaporeans should be allowed to share the fruits of the good economy this year, either through some form of growth bonus or Medisave top-ups."

Political watchers expect Mr Lee's speech to also touch on a topic which continues to attract much feedback on various new media forums - that of integrating locals with new citizens and permanent residents, as well as foreign talent in Singapore.

During his televised National Day message, Mr Lee had emphasised the importance of education, training and upgrading for students and workers, a topic which analysts say he is likely to expand on.

MediaCorp will broadcast Mr Lee's speeches 'live' on its television channels from 6.45pm and provide updates on its Channel NewsAsia website on Sunday.
