SINGAPORE : Members of Parliament (MPs) on Sunday welcomed the Prime Minister's address and are happy he focussed on some of the pressing issues for Singapore's future.

"Education is a social leveller. It is through education that we achieve social mobility, so I find the fact that he has chosen, among three or four topics to focus on, to pick this up, is something very reassuring for the education GPC (Government Parliamentary Committees)," said Josephine Teo, GPC Chair for Education.

Seng Han Thong, MP for Yio Chu Kang said: "The second generation of new immigrants, they are like our Singaporean students. They (use) "lah", "lor"; they enjoy the same kind of games, same kind of lifestyles.

"It takes time, for the first generation. We know they have different lifestyles, different habits. But for the second generation, they are here to stay."

Yeo Guat Kwang, MP for Aljunied GRC said: "These are issues that we think we are most concerned about - what's next for Singapore. I think it's important for us to now have a clearer picture to understand the kind of competition we are facing, the steps we have to take, particularly in terms of how we have to improve productivity."
