SINGAPORE : More money is being poured into a programme to promote financial literacy in schools.

$760,000 in additional funding will be pumped into the Citi-NIE Financial Literacy Programme, which has received S$1 million in funds to date.

Learning the difference between needs and wants are just some of the basic financial skills the Financial Literacy Programme aims to inculcate in students.

The programme aims to benefit 400,000 students and 5,000 teachers by 2012.

This year, a new mentorship programme will be rolled out for trained teachers to become financial literacy ambassadors. They will receive additional coaching and training resources to allow them to train both their peers and students.

Dr Koh Noi Keng, chair of the Citi-NIE Financial Literacy Hub for Teachers said: "Teachers said they are learning a lot and there are teachers who said (they) never knew (about) this... So teachers are very pleased when they are put on this programme.

For the students, they said they now realise that how hard it is to earn money and how important it is to stretch their dollar." - CNA /ls
