SINGAPORE: Despite the economic downturn last year, students who completed their internships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab programme found themselves in high demand.
Eighty six per cent of the interns from the 2008 and 2009 batches have found jobs in the Singapore games and media industries.
GAMBIT alumni have also gone on to win international awards and set up their own games companies.
The developments were shared at their Industry & Media Day today.
The event presented an opportunity for some 40 new students, fresh from a 9-week internship at MIT, to showcase seven newly developed game prototypes to 90 industry players.
Managing Director of Ubisoft Singapore, Olivier de Rotalier, said the programme presents a fantastic opportunity for both the students and the video game industry.
He said the internship has also enhanced the maturity level of participating students by enabling them to understand the challenges of complex projects earlier than their counterparts
GAMBIT is a five-year initiative involving the Media Development Authority of Singapore and MIT, and is supported by the National Research Foundation in Singapore.
It involves a summer internship programme where local tertiary students are attached to MIT to create new innovative games based on research topics. - CNA/fa
