SINGAPORE: Donations for the arts last year amounted to S$22.1 million, falling by S$8.4 million compared to 2008, in the midst of recovery from the economic downturn.
There were 75 fewer sponsors too, with 240 arts patrons - comprising 201 corporations and 39 individuals.
92 of them, of which 13 are new, were recognised at the annual Patron of the Arts awards dinner attended by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts.
Close to half of these 240 arts patrons had been giving to the arts for the past three consecutive years.
Mr Lui said that more efforts would be made to make the arts more accessible to the community, with targeted arts programmes to specific priority segments such as youths and senior citizens.
Sponsors would also have more platforms to play their part.
"There will be more opportunities for sponsors to give to such community arts programmes, and in doing so, play an important role in making the arts an integral part of the lives of Singaporeans," he added.
Arts sponsorships in 2009 were channelled into six key areas.
In addition to supporting festivals and productions, the contributions also funded talent and capability development, residency schemes and arts housing for practitioners, facilities and infrastructure enhancement, as well as community outreach programmes.
Mr Lui said, "As the arts scene grows, there will be an increasing need for facilities and spaces to create and showcase new works, for more funding in arts education and further training, and of course, for more platforms for presentation.
"The NAC cannot do all these alone and we look forward to working in partnership with you to make these possible." - CNA/fa
