SINGAPORE : The Community Chinese Reading Project will receive S$40,000 in funding from the Chinese Language and Culture Fund to promote Chinese reading programmes amongst students.
The joint initiative between the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), and the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), was launched on Saturday.
Monthly storytelling sessions will be conducted within the brightly coloured walls of the CDAC to instil an interest in reading.
Parents are also encouraged to take part in workshops and seminars to get them equipped with reading strategies.
And activities will be held to encourage children and parents to read together.
1,000 students and parents are expected to benefit in the first year of implementation of this reading project which runs till June next year.
"The challenge for parents, as well as teachers, is that the child is very attracted to the Internet, and they are getting a lot of information from the Internet. And we would like them to return to books," said Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State for Education and National Development. - CNA /ls
