SINGAPORE : A series of SMS alerts has been created by the Bukit Panjang Community Emergency and Engagement Committee (C2E) to prepare its residents on what to do in an emergency.

The alerts tell residents how to keep safe during fires, how to perform CPR, and even provide tips on how to handle bomb threats. These are just some of the scenarios that the eight SMS alerts will cater for.

Organisers said the aim is to foster greater community bonding and enhance security awareness in the heartlands.

Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor, North West District, said: "A handphone is quite common among many residents. It is a tool which most of us would carry whenever (we) go anywhere, especially when (we) go overseas.

"So it is a very handy tool where you can put all these emergency preparedness messages and checklists in the handphone."

As part of Bukit Panjang's emergency preparedness efforts, there is a group of more than 370 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members and at least one CERT member looking after each housing block within the constituency. They will help prepare and assist residents in emergencies. - CNA/ms
