SINGAPORE : Singapore's Public Transport Council Chairman Gerard Ee has said Singaporeans are excited about upcoming extensions to the country's rail network.
He added that while there may be inconveniences during the upgrading of train systems, everyone will be better off in the end.
He was at the launch of a campaign to get commuters to be gracious when faced with the prospect of overcrowding on public transport.
Some pushing and shoving are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to discourteous behaviour on public transport.
What other ugly aspects do commuters sometimes show?
One person said: "They talk loudly and they disturb other people."
Another commented: "Most of the passengers would stand near the door. They do not get inside."
A third noted: "Reading newspaper on a crowded train and taking up a lot of space when everyone is trying to get in."
Mr Ee said: "If you are conscious that the bus and the trains are being shared by many people and orderliness will ensure a smoother transition, then it is in everyone's favour to make sure that there is a orderly disembarkation and embarkation."
To spread the word on graciousness, the Public Transport Council has roped in the cast members of the made-in-Singapore musical "Dim Sum Dollies". These ladies will be reminding commuters to be thoughtful to others when taking buses and trains. - CNA/ms
