SINGAPORE : Sembawang GRC will soon start a new health management programme for its residents.

A "Health Champion" programme aims to get residents who are role models to pass on the health message.

Over at Marsiling, many elderly people live alone in rental blocks.

So the focus is on making sure that the seniors can take care of themselves and stay healthy.

At a news conference on Monday, the MP for the area said a Health Champion Group was first introduced there eight months ago.

"Champions" were identified and they taught residents how to lead a healthy lifestyle, and monitor their diabetes and cholesterol levels.

The programme is now ready to be rolled out to the rest of Sembawang GRC.

SR Prasad, chairman of the Indian Activity Executive Committee: "It's not easy to bring non-grassroot leaders into the programme. It's a tough task.

"Being a grassroot leader, to get your own grassroot leader to come in is quite easy. But to bring others - the residents - is quite difficult."

There is another programme called Elderly in Your Estate, which helps seniors living in rental units with things like food rations.

It is complemented by the Neighbours Connect Group, which encourages neighbours to look out for one another.

"Living in isolation and alone, disconnected from neighbours, (the seniors) may put themselves in danger. So connection to neighbours, volunteers, grassroot leaders, service centres is critical," said Hawazi Daipi, MP for Sembawang GRC.

Hawazi believes such programmes encourage the elderly to take part in regular grassroots activities. - CNA /ls
