SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) said the National Arts Council (NAC) and The Esplanade Company will manage the Drama Centre.
This will take effect from October 18. It is part of a management review that was announced in May.
The Council and The Esplanade Company will manage both Victoria Theatre as well as the Drama Centre.
MICA said the aim is for both parties to benefit from each other's areas of expertise and to support the development of the theatre professional.
This is because the number of arts and cultural venues in Singapore is expected to increase in the longer term.
MICA and NAC said the purpose-built mid-sized theatres will play an increasingly important role.
It added there is already strong demand for the Drama Centre, which has led to a need for more trained supporting professionals in technical theatre, production management and arts venue management.
The Centre will remain as a for-hire as well as receiving venue for the arts community.
Rental rates will remain similar and will be decided by the Council.
Under a new basic rental package, hirers can make use of routine equipment and enjoy a greater quantum of support from technical theatre manpower at no additional cost.
Meanwhile, The Esplanade Company will develop and implement industry capabilities for technical theatre, production management and venue management, in consultation with the Council.
The partnership is expected to enable best industry practices to be employed.
Among the nine staff members in Drama Centre, six have been offered employment and will continue to be deployed there.
Of the remaining three, one has been be redeployed within NAC, another has found employment with LaSalle College of the Arts in a related capacity, and the last will be leaving to pursue other interests.
Currently, the two are still discussing possible management models for Victoria Theatre, which is currently closed for renovation.
Details of the management plan will be made known later.
