SINGAPORE: Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said he looks forward to working closely with Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard to further strengthen relations between both countries.
Mr Lee said this in a letter congratulating Ms Gillard on leading the Australian Labour Party to a hard-fought victory at the recent federal elections and her reappointment as prime minister.
He said Singapore and Australia are old friends and longstanding partners.
He added that a bilateral relationship has flourished, underpinned by similar strategic outlooks and close collaboration in many areas.
Mr Lee said defence cooperation between the two countries is strong and economic ties have been growing steadily.
Both share close people-to-people links, with many Australians and Singaporeans visiting and working in the respective countries.
Mr Lee recalls warmly Ms Gillard's visit to Singapore in July 2008, and would like to renew an invitation to Ms Gillard to make an official visit to Singapore.
