SINGAPORE: A renovation company owner has been charged with offering a bribe to a traffic police officer.

Fifty-seven-year-old Gwee Teck Hee, the sole proprietor of Kao Hong Contractor, allegedly offered an unspecified sum of money to Sergeant Mohammad Sufyan Mohd Safie on June 12.

The officer stopped Gwee who was driving along Geylang Road and allegedly using his mobile phone at the same time.

Gwee then allegedly offered the bribe to the policeman.

Sergeant Mohammad Sufyan rejected the offer and arrested Gwee instead.

It's believed Gwee was later found to be driving without a valid license and the car owner's consent. He also faces pending traffic charges.

A pre-trial conference will be held on October 14.

If found guilty of offering the bribe, Gwee faces a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to S$100,000 or both.
