SINGAPORE : A survey conducted by Ciba Vision Singapore has shown that three in five Singaporeans, or 57 per cent, aged 38 and above suffer from presbyopia.

511 people were surveyed.

The age-related eye problem is developed when the eye loses the ability to focus on near objects.

72 per cent of the respondents remain passive about their conditions.

But experts warned that failure to correct presbyopia will affect a person's ability to complete daily tasks.

They said it will also affect their productivity at work.

Experts said the problem is set to increase as Singapore's population ages.

In Singapore, the latest Census 2010 reported that resident population has grown older.

The median age in Singapore is now 37.4, compared to 34.0 in the year 2000. - CNA /ls
