SINGAPORE : Some 1,940 people were issued warnings or fines for pasting illegal advertisements at bus stops and MRT stations in the first eight months of the year.
This is nearly three times higher than the same period last year.
So the Land Transport Authority has come up with a new approach to manage the problem.
Those wanting to advertise can now pay 50 cents a day for an A5-sized space on the board for a minimum period of seven days.
The boards accommodate some 60 advertisements and are found in nine spots near the Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang and Yishun MRT stations.
LTA has installed free advertisement boards previously, but it said they were often subject to abuse.
"We received frequent feedback that people will take away their advertisements or paste over their advertisements, and there are many cases (where) people paste multiple advertisements," said Yoong Chin Chong, acting manager for Road Infrastructure Management at LTA.
"So as a result, we've a lot of these complaints, and some of them even paste their advertisements at the nearby column and actually make the area very untidy," he added.
So far, a number of advertisers have come on board.
In all, LTA spent about S$29,000. The contractor hired by LTA will also ensure illegal advertisements stuck in areas within 500 metres from the board are removed daily.
Mr Yoong said: "Actually this is a trial only - so we need to monitor, and we see how's the response, the feedback, and we'll decide whether we want to extend it islandwide later on."
A commuter said: "I guess it's very good for the advertisers because only 50 cents a day. But I don't know - passers-by may not have time to really look at all the ads because they're so small."
