SINGAPORE : Singapore and the Netherlands are cooperating in the area of urban transport solutions.
A Dutch trade delegation led by Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings was in Singapore for a one day visit and ideas were exchanged in a roundtable discussion.
Speaking to MediaCorp at the sidelines of the visit on Wednesday, Mr Eurlings said it is apt that both countries learn from one another.
He said: "We have to deal with the challenge, to make ever more efficient use of our existing networks. Our space is so scarce, we are small nations, and that is why it is so important to learn from each other to further develop our road information system and the road pricing system.
"Because the Netherlands, like Singapore, is a relatively small country with a ... (big) population, so our space is very scarce. We really need to use each other as an example in finding smart ways to increase our logistic capacity, increase the capacity of our ports, of our roads and public transport.
"And that is what we are doing here, exchanging our experiences in traffic information, in road pricing but also the most efficient usage of port space."
Mr Eurlings noted that Singapore is "a front-runner" in rolling out road congestion pricing and that is one area the Dutch is learning from.
He said Singapore also has vast data and information on traffic flows and the Dutch can offer more extensive ways to use the data.
One way is to see how the data can help commuters decide on their travel choices. This can mean getting a text SMS advising the recipient to work from home or leave for the office after a certain time.
Combined with geo-information, the new National Data Warehouse for Road Traffic Information in Netherlands allows private companies to provide multi-modal travel advice to Dutch commuters.
