SINGAPORE : The National University of Singapore (NUS) has appointed two prominent personalities as Rectors of its first two residential colleges at NUS University Town or UTown.
They are Ambassador-At-Large Professor Tommy Koh, and Chairman of the East Asian Institute, Professor Wang Gungwu.
The UTown is NUS' first residential college, offering an integrated and multi-disciplinary setting for student learning.
It will open in phases, starting with two undergraduate residential colleges and one graduate residence next year.
Two other residential colleges are slated to be ready in 2012.
The College Rector is a non-residential, non-executive head of the College.
The three-year term of both rectors began on July 1.
The Rectors are expected to provide strategic directions and help shape the academic tone and identity of the colleges.
Professor Gungwu said: "It will be an identity which is both local and global. Because the world is getting smaller, it has to be global, but it is never going to stop being local. In the end, what is local and in the neighbourhood must be primary.
"The global part is to enhance it to make what is local and in the neighbourhood better and richer. So the two must go together, but one must never never forget what is local and regional." - CNA/ms
