Singapore: Former NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian says he is going to hand in his application for the Certificate of Eligibility to run for President on Thursday morning to show his commitment to Singapore.
He told a news conference that he is confident that his application, which will be handed in on Thursday morning, will be approved.
Mr Tan said he believes he understands the aspirations and difficulties of the people of Singapore and can be their voice.
He indicated that he will run even if other candidates contest the Presidential Elections as he wants to offer Singaporeans a choice.
Mr Tan who is the first to take the next step towards the upcoming Presidential Elections, said that as a president, he would be able to look at matters from the point of view of the people and offer alternative views as well as better solutions in working with the government.
While acknowledging that other two contenders for the presidency, former MP Dr Tan Cheng Bock and former deputy prime minister Dr Tony Tan, "are good", Mr Tan pointed out that he "has no past baggage" and is more independent as he has not been a Member of Parliament or Cabinet Minister.
He told the news conference that he will bring an open mind and a new process to decision-making if elected as president.
