SINGAPORE: To show that he is capable of handling international relations and the foreign press, presidential hopeful Tan Kin Lian will be visiting Batam on Sunday to do interviews with the local press there.
TODAY understands from a campaign source that the interviews will give Mr Tan the opportunity to extend greetings on behalf of Singaporeans to the people of Batam, with Indonesia due to celebrate its Independence Day soon.
Mr Tan would also be meeting with Singaporeans and viewing the progress of developments in Batam, as there are many Singaporean investments on the island.
"The island is popular with many (Singapore) heartlanders and PMETs due to its proximity plus its cheap to take a break there," the source added.
In the statement, Mr Tan said he was impressed by the developments in Batam over the years, and that he hoped the good relations between Singapore and Indonesia would continue. Mr Tan will also visit shopping areas in Batam which are popular with Singaporeans. - TODAY
