SINGAPORE: A screening of 576 residents in the Marine Parade constituency has revealed that about six per cent of them suffer from some form of depression.
Member of Parliament for the area Dr Fatima Lateef, who revealed this on the sidelines of a community event, said they have since been sent for counselling.
Some 1,200 participants got together on Sunday to form the largest "silver ribbon human chain", to mark World Mental Health Day.
The event also featured a carnival aimed at promoting awareness on mental health issues.
A recent study showed that about one in six adults here will suffer from some form of common mental health disorder in their lifetime.
The problem is that many do not seek professional help.
To further raise awareness, the "Stamp Out Stigma" initiative was launched on Sunday.
"This is what we're trying to do, we're trying to stamp out the stigma and make sure people are aware of what mental wellness is and also to make sure they understand what is mental illness as well," Dr Lateef said.
