SINGAPORE: Hollywood action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger could be coming to Singapore. If plans go smoothly, the 64-year-old former governor of California will be here to promote the Arnold Sports Festival.

Schwarzenegger was supposed to be in the Lion City in May this year for the official opening of Universal Studios Singapore, but the trip was called off due to personal matters.

Organisers of the Arnold Sports Festival told Channel NewsAsia that the Austrian-American could be in Singapore to grace the proposed festival in two years' time, in June 2013.

The event, which is also known as the Arnold Classic in the US, has been held for more than two decades and boasted a total of 25 sports in its 2011 line-up.

Mr Terry Robacker said the festival could have up to 20 sports, including bodybuilding, with private funds of some S$10 million. Mr Robacker is the President of the Singapore Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (SFBF). It is affiliated to the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness, which sanctions the Arnold Sports Festival.

Mr Robacker said: "The Arnold Sports Festival in the US this year drew 16,000 athletes, 500,000 spectators and brought in about US$125 million to the Ohio economy.

"He will be coming. We just saw him in Europe at the Arnold's Classic in Europe, which they just had their first year this year and he spent the entire weekend there, mostly with the bodybuilders because that's his interest. That was where we [confirmed his attendance], in Madrid."

Fans might not have to wait till June 2013 to Schwarzenegger, as he might be visiting Singapore earlier to observe the preparations for the festival.
