NS-EW trains to run slower; dislodged "claws" found in tunnels

SINGAPORE: In its latest update following the two train disruptions this month, operator SMRT said it has completed securing the claws along all underground tracks on both the North-South and East-West Lines.

The claws hold up what's called the "third rail" which supplies power to the trains.

An unprecedented number of claws had been found dislodged along the tracks during SMRT inspections conducted after the train disruptions.

SMRT said the "tried and tested solution" of using cable ties to secure the claws is in line with the recommendation by the original manufacturer.

Meanwhile, SMRT has brought in international experts to check the system.

But it said it will continue to maintain a reduced speed of 40 kilometres per hour for its trains between Bishan and Marina Bay Stations on the North-South Line, and between Bugis and Tiong Bahru Stations on the East-West Line.

This will add two minutes to the normal end-to-end travel time of about 60 minutes.

The extra two minutes is similar to the longer travel time on rainy days when trains travel at slower speeds at above-ground stations.
