SINGAPORE: The Malay-Muslim community's self-help group Mendaki will be celebrating its 30th anniversary.
One achievement the community is proud of is its improved performance in Mathematics in the PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination) in 2010.
Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, said that in that year, nearly 61 percent of Malay students scored A* to C in standard Mathematics.
Dr Yaacob added that the community has finally reversed the trend and crossed the 60 percent mark.
Speaking at a Mendaki brunch session with some 300 students and their parents, Dr Yaacob believes the trend continues to be healthy with the 2011 PSLE results though the details are not out yet.
He added that the Mendaki Tuition Scheme has also received overwhelming response this year.
There are 800 students on the waiting list and Mendaki is working closely with schools to accommodate them by end of February.
The Minister also gave details of some events being lined up for Mendaki's 30th anniversary.
He said: "Two programmes have already been firmed up. The first is we hope to organise a youth symposium in the first half of this year, bringing together our young people to discuss what more needs to be done in terms of our community's progress.
"The second one is a Learning Festival...Mendaki has been associated with learning and we want to put together the whole aspect of learning from formal to informal learning, and provide an opportunity to the community to understand what are the opportunities out there so that they can avail themselves.
"We will work with the private providers and we hope to have it during the school holidays in June-July so that more families can attend the Learning Festival."
