SINGAPORE : Singapore's air quality showed a slight improvement on Friday as the Pollutant Standards Index or PSI reading fell to 54, a two-point improvement from Thursday.

And it seems like the rain on Thursday has put out the raging fires around the island.

Only two small bush fires were reported on Friday, a big drop from the daily average of 10 to 15 bush fires that the island experienced since the beginning of January.

But land-owning authorities are not letting their guards down.

The Singapore Land Authority is clearing the overgrown vegetation in disused state land.

This is being done in consultation with NParks so that nature and greenery can be preserved while minimising fire risks.

They are also demolishing disused farm structures that pose a fire risk.

So far, 14 disused farms in Lim Chu Kang Agrotechnology Park have been cleared.

Over the next few days, another 20 are expected to be demolished. - CNA
