Experts are now using both Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) and western medicines to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
Traditional Chinese Medicine - used for centuries - seems to have a cure for most ailments including sexual problems in men.
Just ask TCM expert Dr Xia Rong who treats problems such as infertility and impotence, sometimes called erectile dysfunction.
Since TCM looks at the whole body system, this could mean looking at all organs to balance the yin and yang.
Dr Xia Rong, TCM Physician and Acupuncturist, Eu Yan Sang, said: "They are not so commonly used in Chinese medicine now, and they are hard to come by. As for rhino horns, they are not used to treat such condition. But we do find deer antlers and deer horns quite useful to improve sex problems."
Besides herbs, Dr Xia Rong says acupuncture is also prescribed.
When treating sexual problems using Western medicine, it is not a totally different ball game altogether.
Its causes - such as diabetes, hypertension and stress - will also be treated and of course the 3 famous pills - Viagra, Cialis and Levitra - will also be considered.
However there's a new kid on the block - not in pill form - but in a tube.
This cream - Befar - is said to be just as effective but with less hassle.
Since it is applied directly on the organ, it's suitable for those with medical conditions.
Dr Li Man Kay, Consultant Urologist, Li Man Kay Urology Associates, said: "These are mainly patients who do not respond to the oral medication and they are like patients with diabetes and patients who've had surgery done to the pelvic region so that the nerve supply to the penis has been affected."
But there's a snag - the cream is not available in Singapore.
As for herbal products like traditional medicine or Tongkat Ali - the famous root known to enhance male performance - Dr Li says he can't vouch for its efficacy as it's not as scientific as western medicine.
But scientific trials in the US have resulted in Virilar, a herbal product which claims to give men vitality and life.
Marketed as a health supplement, it seems to give those who take them more than just a head-start in energy boost.
Wilson Ng, Virilar User, said: "I actually tried synthetic products before, gives me hot flashes which is not very comfortable but for this product, I don't have that kind of feeling and actually I feel very energised and I of course I feel young, really young as if I'm back in my teens!"
Sivert Ong, Virilar User, said: "After taking this supplement, I did feel that there's an urge and a push in my performance in that sense."
The supplement is made of 27 ingredients, including ginseng and Tongkat Ali.
Shannon Tan, Managing Director, bioDYNElabs, said: "Negative feedback would be that the product is so good that I don't need to sleep much anymore and the wife will be wondering what are you on. And some people say that I feel young again and it's because they feel the energy that experience when they are much younger." - CNA
