SINGAPORE: The apology by Workers' Party candidate James Gomez does not properly address the serious issue at hand, says Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo.
Mr Yeo, who is leading the People's Action Party slate in Aljunied GRC in the coming election, was speaking to reporters during his Sunday morning walkabout at Kovan.
On Saturday night at a party rally at Nee Soon East, Mr Gomez admitted that he did not submit an application to the Elections Department for a minority candidate certificate, reversing his earlier claim that he did.
Prior to the admission, he had remained silent, despite the release by the Department of security camera footage and a recording of a telephone conversation which showed he did not submit his application.
The PAP then called on the Workers' Party leadership to explain the events surrounding Mr Gomez's dealings with the Department.
Mr Yeo stressed the matter is a serious one that should not be taken lightly.
"James Gomez was accusing not only a department, he was accusing an innocent public official of a very serious misdeed. If there were no closed circuit television cameras, that civil servant would have been in trouble and his whole family would have suffered for it, so that he could play a political game?
"He (Gomez) should not think Singaporeans are simpletons. I would like to move on too, but please give us a proper reply.
"Don't think Singaporeans are such simplistic, gullible people. You go to a supermarket, you take a big item and put it in your shopping bag. Having walked out, you get caught with your hand in the bag and you say it was an honest mistake. I don't think it's that simple." - CNA/ir
