SINGAPORE: The agencies under the Trade and Industry Ministry have awarded scholarships to some 40 students this year.

The FireFly Scholarships involve statutory boards like SPRING Singapore and the Economic Development Board.

The number of students who received their scholarships this year is more than double last year's.

The students were chosen from more than a thousand applicants.

The scholars will pursue their degrees in areas like economics and engineering.

This year, about 1 in 4 scholars have chosen to study in non-English speaking countries such as France and Germany.

"Singapore is only useful when it can play a role in the global economics. We are a useful node if we can connect to different markets. To connect to different markets effectively, we need people who can understand the culture, the business practices, speak the language. I also see that we have some scholars going to China and this will prepare us well for the future, connecting to the world," said Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State, Trade and Industry. - CNA /dt
