SINGAPORE: Singapore is the first ASEAN country to adjust its regulations so that electronics goods traded with other member nations no longer need to be retested or certified.

The move is aimed at increasing inter-ASEAN trade.

These adjustments bring the country into line with the region's Electronic and Electrical Equipment Agreement signed two years ago to align electronic equipment standards in all 10 ASEAN countries.

The 41 electronics products covered by the agreement include televisions, air conditioners and toasters.

All ASEAN members are expected to align their legislation with the standard by the end of 2011.

Testing and certification expenses represent between 2 percent and 5 percent of total production costs for most electronics.

Singapore exported S$45.3b of electrical and electronic equipment to other ASEAN countries in 2005. - CNA /dt
